MDMA Statement on Senate Hearing to Examine Physician Owned Distributorships

Washington, D.C. – Mark Leahey, President and CEO of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), issued the following statement today regarding the Senate Finance Committee hearing examining the role and relationships that Physician Owned Distributorships (PODs) have in the health care delivery system:

“MDMA thanks Chairman Hatch and Ranking Member Wyden for their work to examine the troubling dynamics of physician owned distributors (PODs).  Every effort must be made to ensure that nothing compromises the physician-patient relationship, including eliminating any financial incentives to utilize a particular brand of product by a physician or hospital.

“It is also critical that we protect and encourage appropriate collaborations between physicians and innovators so that patients can continue to have access to cutting-edge advancements and cures that medical technologies provide.

“MDMA looks forward to working with the Committee and all policy makers as we seek to strike the proper balance so that patient care and medical technology innovation can thrive.”
